The township is divided into 13 distinct sections.
Middletown has 34 municipal parks and more than a thousand acres of parkland. Among the most unusual facilities is the 131-acre Stevenson Tract off West Front Street in the Lincroft area. It abuts Shadow Lake and has woodlands, a walking trail, a fishing pier and a launch for small boats.
Among the most widely used parks is the Middletown Township Thompson Park, off New Jersey Route 520, which has seven baseball diamonds, playground equipment and a lighted basketball court.
OTHER facilities include tennis courts, roller hockey rinks, a nature center, bike trails, a miniature golf course and soccer fields.
The township also maintains two public swimming facilities, Ideal Beach and Leonardo Beach, on Raritan Bay.
In addition to the township parks, there are seven county parks and the seven-and-a-half-mile-long federally owned Sandy Hook. The largest county-owned park is the 665-acre Hartshorne Woods off Navesink Avenue, which has hiking and biking trails. Other recreational facilities include three country-club golf courses, the county-owned 130-slip Monmouth Cove Marina off Port Monmouth Road and the state-owned 179-slip Leonardo Marina off Concord Avenue.
